This project transforms and enhances a black-clad residence situated on a gently sloped, wooded site near Amagansett, NY. The design introduces a refined modern addition while reconfiguring key interior spaces to strengthen the home’s connection to its landscape and improve spatial flow.

A new cubic volume is added to the front of the house, creating a striking architectural counterpoint to the existing structure. This volume houses a light-filled foyer and an expansive new living room framed by large windows that capture views of the surrounding trees. Above, the addition connects to the master bedroom, extending it outward to form a private terrace overlooking the front yard. The elevated outdoor space enhances the experience of the sloping site and provides a serene outlook over the newly designed meditative garden that lines the approach to the home.

Inside the existing structure, the great room has been reimagined to accommodate a dining area, a fireplace sitting zone, and an open kitchen. Minimal yet impactful modifications to the kitchen—including enlarged front-facing windows and new open shelving—brighten the space and foster visual continuity with the addition. Throughout the first floor, Douglas fir flooring extends seamlessly into the new living room, the entire level refinished to a lighter, cohesive tone that unifies old and new.

The architectural intervention also includes a new black metal roof over the existing house, strengthening the bold identity of the home while tying it to the material expression of the addition. At the entry, a cantilevered canopy—designed as a trellis-like structure—introduces a delicate interplay of filtered light and shadow, marking the threshold with subtle drama.

Balancing clarity of form, warmth of material, and sensitivity to the wooded context, the project creates a renewed, contemporary dwelling that feels both grounded and elevated—an inviting retreatwoven into the natural landscape of Amagansett
