The existing house was subject to a phased interior renovation which also included the addition of an attached garage connected through a glazed breezeway. New landscape, planters, patios and decks were also designed by the team in a progressive process that eventually fully transformed the original house.
An exterior staircase was turned into a secondary stair connecting the basement with the new breezeway, bringing natural light to the lower level which was previously unfinished. Fully connected now by two stairs the basement was treated as an additional floor adding a media room and bar, finished laundry, one bathroom, one gym, and mechanical spaces. All interiors were touched to some extent favouring clean geometric spaces with predominantly neutral colors which intensify the warmth of natural wood, rattan and brass. The finished interiors by Kim Holton reflect a graceful play of materials throughout the house.
1st and second floor were fully upgraded, fireplace, new kitchen, en-suite bathrooms among others turned into design subjects as the project moved on.
As the scope of work increased the design had to adapt to the new requirements, a rational and clean layout was achieved with smooth transitions from room to room in spite of the complexity of required connections from the existing house to the new addition.
The neutral architectural canvas was beautifully enriched by textures which define the character for each room. Examples of this are the selection of tiles, powder room wallpaper, media room's slatted wall, and even the backyard fencing.
Natural light and openness to the surrounding landscape is abundant, wherever this is absent, subtle lighting and natural interior finishes entertain and please the observer's eyes, providing a gratifying sensorial experience. The excellent execution by Terra Construction, and the achieved balance between architecture and interiors have created nurturing rooms to enhance the occupants wellbeing, offering a sense of joy and calm in the comfort of their home.
